KATHY Bierma will be looking to chalk up a victory when she takes to the pavement in the name of art next month.

The Scarborough artist will be part of the Chalk Up competition, which will see entrants drawing up different designs on the pathway outside the Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre.

Kathy said the designs, which will each be about three square metres, would capture the public’s imagination at the popular coastal spot.

“It’s going to be exciting to watch each artist’s design evolve over the four hours, and see how the public engages in the process,” she said.

“Chalk art is not really that big in Perth, so it’s a good initiative by the City of Stirling to get people involved.

“The competition is a great way to nurture artistic talent and it gives artists a chance to get out there and try something new.”

While the Mercedes College art teacher could not reveal the details of her design for the day, she said it would contain a familiar feel for residents.

“I can’t say too much about it, but it captures a range of features and iconic references from the Scarborough area,” she said.

The competition runs from 2 to 6pm, during which time the public will have a chance to vote for their favourite piece of artwork in the Peoples Choice Awards.

The art competition will be followed by the At the Beach concert, which is set to feature Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens.

Local reggae artist Carus Thompson will also be among the musical guests at the free concert, which marks the end of the City’s Summerset Festival. For more information, contact the City on 9345 8555.
