FORGET the boutiques and sought-after shopping strips. Fashionistas can now score a retail ‘hit’ at an unlikely local mainstay.

Shenton Park Antiques on Onslow Road – traditionally dealing in furniture and objets d’art of yesteryear – has introduced a collection of new designer-label cocktail dresses and wedding gowns.

Owner Jenn Donelly, operator of the annual UWA Antique Jewellery and Vintage Fair which celebrates its 10th year in July, said the well-priced range included dresses from $40 to $60 and gowns (including one vintage-styled garment) well under $1000.

Adding to an assortment of pre-loved furs – a controversial favourite of Kim Kardashian – Jenn has also brought in 1920s hats, shoes and gloves.

“Vintage is huge in Melbourne and Sydney, but of course being in Perth we’re a bit slower to catch on. However it is gradually becoming popular here too,” she said.

An avid collector, Jenn’s personal antiques include perfume bottles, silverware and animal figurines.

“I started my nieces and nephews off with something each to collect when they were born, so every birthday I give them an item to add to their assortment,” she said.

“Unfortunately there aren’t enough young people collecting today. Frequently people come into the shop wanting to sell their collections because their kids don’t want them.

“It’s a shame

“So, every time I clap my eyes on a little person who comes in, I try to give them something small in their line of collection, to encourage them a bit more.”

- The UWA Antique Jewellery and Vintage Fair is at Winthrop Hall, Nedlands, on July 12. `
