SUCCESS Olympian Lauren Mitchell is in her second year of Year 12 at Iona Presentation College but not because she failed her first attempt.

The WA Institute of Sport gymnast is completing five TEE subjects over two years to work around her busy training and competition schedule.

Mitchell (17) received recognition for her hard work at school and in the gym arena when WAIS announced her the winner of the Athlete Career and Education Award at a presentation breakfast last Friday.

The athlete studied human biology and English last year and will sit her final three exams this year.

Mitchell said Iona had been very supportive to ensure she could finish Year 12 and continue gymnastics at a top level.

“I get more time to do school work because I’m not doing as many subjects and have time to train,” she said.

“WAIS has given me so much support so I can achieve all my goals.”

Mitchell hopes to study biomedical science at university but in the meantime is focused on the Nationals in Perth during July where she aims to gain selection in the Australian team for a competition in Tokyo.

The teenager competes in four events – bars, vault, floor and beam – but the latter is her speciality.
