AN eight-year-old boy who weighs just 25kg and has only just started learning to swim saved his 130kg father from drowning by dragging him to safety.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reports Cameron van Hooft had to spring into action after almost knocking out dad Jason, 37, with an accidental kick to the head as they swam in a backyard pool at Helensvale in Queensland on Tuesday.

"He went under the water and I was kicking my legs when he ran straight into me by mistake," Cameron explained.

He said his semi-conscious father was trying to make his way to the side of the pool but his head kept going under the water.
