A NUDE portrait rejected for a local art exhibition is sure to arouse debate on whether nudity has any place in art.

Mt Helena artist Jeremy Holton claims he was told his painting, titled The Sweetest Smile and submitted to the Shire of Mundaring Open Art Acquisition Exhibition, was pornographic.

Each year, the Mundaring Arts Centre hosts an exhibition for the Shire, from which the Shire selects and purchases works for its collection.

This year’s exhibition officially opened last night and runs until March 7, with 33 artworks on show, including a painting by Mr Holton of Mundaring Weir.

However, he is disappointed three months’ work on the nude portrait did not pay off.

“I’m shocked that they would consider this to be pornographic,” he said.

“I don’t think it is. It is distinctly different (from porn). The painting is very detailed and realistic, but I don’t see why that should be a problem.

“There is no obvious genitalia even though the legs are open. I believe the figure is secondary to the drape, which is bright and very colourful.”

Mundaring Arts Centre director Jenny Haynes said the committee believed the painting was not of quality, and inappropriate for the exhibition.

“It’s a painting… laying there with breast and vagina showing, inviting him to come to bed,” she said.

“It is poorly composed. It was refused on the grounds that it was not a very good painting.”

Ms Haynes said there had always been a fine line between quality artwork that celebrated sensuality and the female form, and pornography, but at no stage was Mr Holton told his painting was pornographic.

The conditions of entry also clearly stated the selection committee reserved the right to refuse any entry.

Mr Holton admitted it was a risk submitting the work, but believed there was a place for nudity in art.

“Nudity has been part of art for hundreds of years,” he said.

“It is one of the most enjoyable but difficult things to paint.”

What everyone else is thinking

Godly Nature must be a artists carving wonderful works of beauty. Of all those, feminine beauty is one of the most charming. Beauty is the subject of sight and so we should fearlessly look at the beauty of objects. There is no room for shyness or fear. Only thing is we should never entertain evil thoughts.

Nude Female Figures represents the nature's beauty as it is and unlike porn it is not a fantasy. It's the depiction of realistic figures.

I think that porn is for commerce -- money. art is not commerce
I did a series of paintings from porn and I sold some, but they aren't porn

they are a personal, emotional reaction to porn
art does not need to be moral

Through ages of evolution our senses have learned to recognize certain signals, largely, in the case of humans, through the eyesight, whereby we escape danger and are attracted to what is good for us. These sense-signals are wholly practical and by themselves lead to no acquaintance with the conception of beauty in art. This is not the place to delve into the basis of aesthetics, but it can be briefly stated that the concept of beauty arises only when an individual is detached from the purely personal urgencies of his own desires and fears. Beauty, in other words, is the product of a view of things which transcends the personal and glimpses the universal. It is a hint of the wholeness of life - and unity to which the individual, concerned only with pure practical problems of self-preservation, is wholly blind.

I have to agree with the Arts Centre, it is not a suitable piece for this exhibition. Why would we as ratepayers want this on our shire building walls?

As a practicing painter myself for five decades, I commended his nude for its artistic merit.
I feel sorry for some art viewers who mirror themself when looking upon an artwork, especially to those wannabe artists... so what`s wrong with Egon Shiele`s work holding his own organ? What`s wrong with those erotic Japanese prints and drawings decorating their own museums? So what`s wrong with the “provocative” photograph of internationally famous artist Jeff Coon (together with a porn star) that has been exhibited worldwide including here in WA museum ... It`s all in the mind brother/sister!

Yes painting is hard work, I am a professional artist and make my living through painting, I have sold over 800 paintings in the last 15 years but painting is never easy. At the same time it is enjoyable or at least compulsive.

I can assure you that I respect my model enormously it is those that say the painting is pornographic or lewd that show her disrespect.

Of course I agree that art criticism is totally subjective and I respect and consider everybody's view of my work, but you are wrong about the figure being contorted to fit the frame as the painting accurately depicts the pose. Perhaps the foreshortening is confusing to your eye.

arduous/enjoyable: both words you have used to describe the process...
a fine line. Yes, I have been in the fortunate position of creating art from "life"; both male and female nudes, and even some of my friends have held that model 'position' in a formal setting, so I speak from some experience here (not just a "prude"!)
Without the benefit of seeing the work in real life, I have described the POSE as lewd. If I get close and see an "oblivious" look in her eyes then perhaps it would be even more disturbing. Please show some respect for your model; she is not a statue for draping distracting colourful cloth, she is a person, and for some reason, none of you (male) people have acknowledged that.
And regarding composition; it looks like you have contorted the form to fit the frame of the canvas. Her neck is at an uncomfortable angle. Months of work is not the point. Look, see, be, take a picture! Any criticism of "art" is subjective

"In Art, morality does not exist, Art is Immortal"
We might as well close Sistine Chapel.

For me, Jeremy`s painting is a door to open. It is for the viewer to open and discover, not the artist’s space, but there own dimension…

I did the painting because I liked the composition with the warm flesh above and below contrasting with the pattern of the drape. Initially my primary interest was the drape not the figure.

As I worked I became more aware of the contradiction between the apparent overt sexuality and the actual innocence of the pose. Contrary to what you might think, the model was completely oblivious to the sexual aspects of the pose.

The dictionary defines 'lewd' as "Preoccupied with sex and sexual desire; lustful". Nothing could be further from the truth. I spent months on this painting and quite definitely I was not preoccupied with sex during the arduous process of painting. Anybody with any experience of artist's models would know that they are generally unselfconscious and not at all sexy.

The sexual aspects of the painting and any lewdness or pornography are more in the eyes of the beholder than the artist or the model. To me its the shyness that makes the painting work

well he got his 15 minutes of fame! From what I can see of the work it is nothing special, compositionally, and the pose, while perhaps not pornographic, could certainly be described as lewd. ("unladylike")
There is always going to be a fine line between images that are an apotheosis of the female (or male ) form and personality, and those which could be construed as exploitation. Some of the best nude portraiture has an element of modesty or shyness which makes it more appealing/alluring than it would be otherwise.
There are many other forums available for the exhibition of art, perhaps Mr Holton could try a few.

So if i am tempted to visit the Mundaring Art centre I can feast my eyes on vases of flowers, and cat and dog portraits.
On second thoughts, i dont think i will bother-its not going to stimulate my brain.

There are two significant points to consider and neither relate to the nudity element. Firstly the Arts Centre Director has stated that the artist was not told it was pornographic and secondly (as with all competitions) the committee reserved the right to refuse entry.
I am not a prude, on the contrary I consider nudity is the most natural state and, like most normal people, I can appreciate the beauty of the human form of either gender. From what I could see of the image, the pose was verging on provocative and the committee did the right thing in refusing it entry; especially as they thought it was poorly composed and not a painting of quality. Try again Mr Artist but next time depict the body emphasising it's beauty.

This is as far from pornographic as a normal, intelligent and adult person could possibly imagine. The world is going absolutely and utterly crazy!!!!!!!!!The lunatics are in charge of the nuthouses, people who find this style of artistic expression as pornographic must have had a typical, brainwashed, religious upbringing, warped in the views of the normal population.
