RESEARCHERS at the University of WA are investigating how to prevent injuries that take place when older people fall.
Professor Miranda Grounds, of the School of Anatomy and Human Biology, said the loss of muscle mass was one of the reasons why older people tended to fall.
She said that was why rehabilitation was difficult.
Professor Grounds and associate professor Peter Arthur will use an Australian Research Council Linkage grant of more than $80,000 to appoint a PhD student to support research examining whether oxidative stress is a key factor in muscle wasting.
